The name Albufeira comes from the Arabic “Al-buhera”, meaning “castle of the sea” or “small lagoon”. The Arab influence is still visible today in the traditional architecture, with whitewashed houses and narrow streets in the old town.
It was in the 1960s that Albufeira began its transformation from a small fishing village into one of Europe’s most popular holiday spots. Today, it continues to be one of the Algarve’s most visited towns, welcoming travellers from across the globe.
