Praia do Castelo sits about 6 kilometres west of Albufeira old town, tucked below the sandstone cliffs near the resort village of Sesmarias. It’s small and quiet, the kind of place you miss if you don’t know to look for it. Most people searching for Praia do Castelo Albufeira want exactly this: a cove beach, not a long town strip. The sand is soft and gold, and the water is usually calm behind the shelter of the cliffs. It works well for a slow half-day by the sea: a swim, then lunch above the sand once you’ve dried off.
Where Praia do Castelo Sits on the Albufeira Coast
This part of the coast belongs to the run of cove beaches heading west from Albufeira towards Galé. Praia do Castelo, in the central Algarve, falls roughly in the middle of that stretch. Praia da Coelha sits just to the east, with Praia do Evaristo a similar distance to the west. From Faro Airport, the beach is about 50 minutes by car.
The name comes from a watchtower that once stood on the clifftop. It was built in the mid-16th century to watch this coast for Barbary pirate raids arriving from North Africa. The ruins still sit close to the beach access point, so you pass a piece of that history on your way down to the sand.
If you want the wider picture first, our guide to the best beaches in Albufeira sets out how the coves compare.
Sand and Cliffs at Praia do Castelo
The beach isn’t one single stretch. There’s a main pocket of gold sand around 200 metres long, backed by ochre cliffs that rise to roughly 9 metres. Spreading out from it are several smaller coves, split up by rocky outcrops that the sea has worn into odd shapes over time.
At low tide, more of that sand opens up and you can pick your way around the rocks into quieter corners. There’s not much natural shade, so bring your own for the middle of the day. Keep a sensible distance from the base of them, though, as loose rock does come down.

Things to Do at Praia do Castelo
Swimming is the main draw. The bay is sheltered, so the water tends to stay calm and clear. Lifeguards watch the main beach through the summer. Snorkelling is worth the effort here too. The rocky sections hold small fish and the visibility is often good on a settled day.
Beyond the water, this is a beach for slower plans. You can walk between the coves at low tide, or hunt for crabs in the tidal pools. Some people just hire a sunbed and read. There are no jet skis or banana boats, which is part of why it stays peaceful. Families with younger children tend to like the calm water and the enclosed feel.
Facilities and Parking at Praia do Castelo
For a small beach, the basics are well covered. There are toilets and showers, and you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas near the sand. A small free car park sits on top of the cliffs, about 50 metres from the entrance. In summer it fills early, so aim to arrive before mid-morning.

Food is sorted by the Castelo Beach Club, which sits right on the sand. It serves grilled fish and seafood, plus lighter plates such as tuna poke bowls. It works for both a long lunch and a sunset drink. One thing to note: access is by a wooden staircase from the car park, so the beach isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
How to Reach Praia do Castelo from Albufeira
Driving is the simplest option. From Albufeira old town it’s a short, fifteen-minute trip west towards Sesmarias, and the beach is signposted once you’re close. The clifftop car park is the obvious place to leave the car.
If you’d rather not drive, Albufeira’s Giro network can get you close. Line 8 runs a circular route from the Terminal Rodoviário in town. It takes about 25 minutes to the Castelo / Evaristo stop on the main road. From there it’s roughly a 750 metre walk down Rua da Torre Velha to the sand. Buses run hourly on weekdays and every two hours at weekends and on holidays, so check the times before you set off.
Nearby Beaches Worth Combining in a Day
One of the best things about Praia do Castelo is what surrounds it. Praia da Coelha lies just east, close enough to reach on foot in under twenty minutes from its own car park. It has the same cove character and a good beach restaurant of its own.

Along the same stretch you’ll also find Praia de São Rafael, known for the arches and rock stacks rising out of the water, and the compact cove of Praia dos Arrifes. Praia do Evaristo sits just to the west. For open sand and more room to spread out, Praia da Galé is a short drive on.
Plan Your Visit to Praia do Castelo
So, is it worth the detour off the main strip? If you want a calm cove with clean water and a good lunch above the sand, then yes. Praia do Castelo suits couples and families who prefer somewhere small over somewhere busy. Come early for parking and bring water in high summer. Give yourself long enough to try one of the neighbouring coves too, and it pairs easily with the other things to do in Albufeira.
